The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion is finally on.
The undefeated flamboyant boxer Floyd Mayweather will glove up against Conor McGregor in Las Vegas in a lightweight match on the 26th of August.
Conor confirmed the fight on Twitter with a simple post “The fight is on.”
It had been reported that both fighters in this bout could earn as much $100m, which would make it one of the richest game in the history of boxing.
Floyd Mayweather is largely regarded as the best boxer of this era, retired after his last fight in 2015 with an unbeaten record after 49 fights. A feat only achieved by Rocky Marciano in the history of boxing.
Floyd Mayweather first made the decision to retire in 2008 but returned to the ring for 10 more fights.
Boxing debut for Conor McGregor
This fight is a little mismatched as Mcgregor is a mixed martial artist who has never boxed professionally before and in the past had challenged Mayweather to a fight under the rules of mixed martial arts.
He got his boxing license last year from the California State Athletic Commission, which makes him eligible for a fight in the State.
Dana White, the president of the UFC, who was part of the negotiation revealed to ESPN that they have been discussing for a long time.
“We have had a couple of discussions in the last few weeks. It all went great. Floyd is surrounded by people who are smart. So now we can say that a deal that seems impossible has been closed.”
“I cannot say that Conor will win this fight. I am not also saying that Floyd will win. But we all know the Conor McGregor will have a go at anyone and Floyd is no different. So we are looking forward to a great fight that fans will love.”
