Southgate should take the top job, says Rooney

Gareth Southgate is now is “pole position” to take the top job in English football, according to Wayne Rooney.
The calls came following a decisive win against Scotland in the World Cup Qualifier against Scotland.
Winning by three goals to nil now means Mr Southgate’s team has notched up seven points from three qualifying games while he has been in charge.
While nothing has been decided yet, the latest win puts Mr Southgate in a good position when the Football Association (FA) meets to formally assess its options.
They are set to discuss whether Mr Southgate’s temporary role should become permanent following a friendly with Spain on Tuesday.
However, Mr Southgate certainly seems to have the support of his England squad.
Mr Southgate has backed England captain Mr Rooney amid criticism of the striker’s current performance.
And, Mr Rooney repaid that loyalty by saying: “Southgate has done brilliant with the U21s and he’s come in and done a really good job.
“He’s got two wins from three and a good point from the last game in Slovenia. It’s down to the FA now and he’s put himself in pole position and I’m sure the right decision will be made.”
Mr Southgate took over the reins from Sam Allardyce in September. Mr Allardyce, nicknamed Big Sam, was forced to stand down following an investigation in which he allegedly told reporters he could help them get around player transfer rules.
Police have now said they are not investigating any criminal behaviour on the part of Mr Allardyce, although that came too late to save his job.
Mr Southgate has said he has “loved” being at the helm of the England team, although he accepts the decision is out of his hands.
He said: “It’s a unique situation. I’m not sure anybody else has had this many games for everybody to assess what you’re doing.
“I just wanted to win this game because I know what it means to this country. It was a big night for our players to come through this pressure environment given the recent history.”
The latest match was won with three headers from Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill. That means England is now at the top of Group F by two points.
Liverpool player Mr Sturridge said: “I think he’s got a good chance to get the job. All the lads are very relaxed with him and we like the way things are going.”
